PaperRater is a web-based proofreading application that helps users improve their writing and aids language teachers in reviewing their students’ materials. The automated tool makes use of Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Information Retrieval, Computational Linguistics, and Data Mining to run comprehensive grammar, spelling, and plagiarism scans that are said to be at par with reviews conducted by professional editors. The technology works by typing or copy-pasting content into a dialog box located on the PaperRater website. Files can also be uploaded directly onto the portal. Users then need to indicate the educational level of the person who drafted the contents – from 1st grade to post-graduate students. One also needs to identify the type of paper submitted – from business correspondence, to essays and stories, to articles and reviews, and more. These specifications allow the system to make corrections that are in line with what users need.
